As I’m sure some of you may have noticed, the EC! Volume 1 Kickstarter didn’t make it to the funding goal. Unfortunately, this means the book won’t be able to be made for awhile, due to funds not being raised in time before the deadline. About halfway through the campaign, I foresaw that there was a serious chance the book wouldn’t be funded this time around. I saw this as a chance to let fate dictate my next move.
If the campaign was successful, I would continue doing my usual routine of working myself into the ground to finish volume 1 and try to keep the webcomic running weekly again. If the project didn’t get funded, I would go on an extended hiatus.
I didn’t let a lot of people know about this because I didn’t want it to come off as an ultimatum “Gimme money, or I wont post art!!!” There was a lot of thought put into this decision, and I owe it to you guys to give you a proper explanation of how it came to this, and what to expect in the future.
For those of you who want the TL;DR, skip over the next part to the end.
WHY AN EXTENDED HIATUS?
One of the biggest reasons is: I am drained.
Artistically and mentally, I have been worn down from nonstop projects, conventions, and client work. I had a good update schedule going on about 3 years ago, but then I took on a project that I should have known would be bad for me. I’m not going to go into detail on the project, but essentially what happened was I took on a client that didn’t respect me as a creator, or understand the time and work that went into the project they wanted me to do for them. Taking on said project ROYALLY messed up both my webcomic, as well as the other project opportunities I had to turn down so that I could finish my ex-clients project. After months of work and failed attempts to see eye to eye with this client, I left the project. After that, I went back to working on my own comics for a little bit before being offered an amazing freelance project I simply couldn’t resist, and it was the best freelance job of my career so far (and I hope to be able to work on more projects by the same client in the future! )
In the time I’ve spent doing other peoples projects, my projects have suffered. My webcomic’s updating has been sporadic, I’ve been struggling to find time and energy to work on pages and scripts, I have spent the past few months doing more promotion making and promoting, and doing more convention prep than I have been actually MAKING art.
There is a lot I want to do. I want to rebuild my page buffer for Epic Chaos! so that I don’t have to go on hiatus again. I want to do more illustrating and painting, make more original art to put into my portfolio and to sell at conventions. I want to do more conventions, maybe some cons outside of California. I want to bring more books and art into the world for everyone to enjoy.
In order to do all of this, I need to NOT be constantly worried about updating pages and preparing for conventions. I’ve been doing so much, yet feeling like I’m getting nowhere; all while dealing with real world pressures, and episodes of depression and anxiety. All of this is starting to take a toll on me.
For the sake of my health, well-being, and art, I’m taking a break. I will continue updating my Patreon and occasionally Instagram, but my updates on all of my other social media accounts and the Epic Chaos! website will be slowing down exponentially. I am not laying down the pencil. I am just switching focus. I will be back, and when I come back, I’ll be better than ever. I just need to take time to get back into the swing of things.
WHEN WILL YOU BE BACK?
I’m hoping sometime this year.
I am cutting back on shows and updates so I can focus on:
1st taking care of myself for a week or two before
2nd working on art and comics
3rd working on the new (improved) Kickstarter
4th working on my convention schedule and new booth set up
I’m scheduled to appear at KrakenCon as a panelist, and another show as a Guest, but those are the only events I am committed to at this time. All other conventions and events are postponed until next year.
Epic Chaos! will return to updating when I have a decent page buffer saved so you guys never have to miss an update again.
TL;DR : Because of a few years of not taking care of myself and my art, I’m taking a vacation. Follow me on Instagram for random pictures, or on Patreon to see art progress.
WHAT ABOUT THE KICKSTARTER?
To those of you who supported the kickstarter by backing it or spreading the link around: I want to thank you for the support. It’s you guys who make it easier to soldier on and keep at it when I’m feeling low. Raising over 60% of the kickstarter with only 73 backers is an amazing feat that shouldn’t be taken lightly! You guys are the best, and I am DEEPLY humbled to have such amazing people support my work. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish I could hug all of you ♥
There WILL BE another kickstarter in the future. You guys will be hearing about it once I figure out how to make it better than the first one. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.
This is not the end, simply the start of a new beginning, that I hope you guys will stick around for. I will be back. It’s only good bye for a short time.
Keep being amazing guys.
See you soon~
